Dear Mr. Mayor and Members of the City Council,
As a former Councilmember and Mayor, I am asking that the city council reverse their decision and appoint Jeff Wan as Mayor. The action taken at your December 1st council meeting against Jeff Wan is the most divisive vindictive petty political power grab I have witnessed in the last 40 years.
It is a long held tradition and part of council guidelines that the Vice Mayor be appointed as Mayor. It has occurred year after year except for one Vice Mayor that did not win re-election and one Vice Mayor that was convicted of a felony and had to resign.
It has also been a long standing tradition that the candidate that gets the highest number of votes be appointed Vice Mayor. These guidelines and traditions are in place for a reason. It is to prevent what just occurred at the December 1st meeting.
Elections always have negative elements, but after the election is over it is time to put petty politics aside and govern. It is time to do what is in the best interest of the council and community. Carl Wolfe, Peter Cloven and Holly Tillman, I know you are not naive enough to think throwing Jeff Wan under the bus was a good idea and this action would somehow bring harmony to the council and the community.
Peter Cloven there were vicious attacks on both sides by your supporters and supporters of the candidates you aligned with during the election. Especially, by two planning commissioners. One even got so aggressive he was slanderous. Should the community hold you accountable for the aggressive actions of your supporters or do your election rules only apply to everyone else?
Jeff Wan was not a candidate, yet you feel he needs to be punished by you for violating the "Cloven Election Doctrine". Sounds pretty self-righteous? How long do these new rules last. Does this now mean that Jim Diaz and Jeff Wan can never be Mayor? Have you established a new rotation policy for Mayor that the mayor can only rotate between you, Holly and Wolfe? How long is Jeff's Sentence, a year, two years, or life? Does this mean you cannot support any legislation Jeff proposes or do the your rules only apply to the Mayor position? What happened to forgiveness? A lot of unanswered questions.
Peter Cloven does this mean that anyone who runs for council in the future has to get your permission before they make comments to make sure it passes your mean or unkind rule? Does this mean that if one of their supporters breaks your mean and unkind rule and they win, they are not eligible for Mayor. Does this also mean that the public does not have the right to criticize a member of their governing body. I could of sworn that this is a First Amendment Right. A lot of new rules.
City Council, Jeff Wan deserves better. He is a very popular, well respected and trusted representative and is one of the most intelligent politicians I have seen in this county.
Carl Wolfe, Peter Cloven and Holly Tillman your actions will be your legacy. Please for the good of the community, reverse your decision and appoint Jeff Wan as Mayor. The community is very angry and you have the power to start the healing process. I know the community will forgive you if you, Stop the Divide and Right the Wrong. Unless you do this you should get rid of the "Do The Right Thing" campaign. It is becoming a joke.
Let your consistence be your guide.
Signed,
Bill Walcutt
