Dear Clayton Community,

There has been a noticeable shift at City Hall since the introduction of the new staff. Over the past several months, the progress we've seen is not only evident but genuinely promising. Despite the continued complaints from a former council member, a current council member, the editor of The Pioneer, and a group of critics who only showed up to council meetings to voice their disdain, the results speak for themselves: the turnover at City Hall has led to a revitalized team that is truly committed to the job.

It's important to emphasize that the resignation of past city manager Bret Prebula and his team marked a pivotal turning point. Contrary to the criticisms of those still holding onto the past, this was, in hindsight, one of the best things to happen for Clayton. Prebula's decision to align himself politically with certain council members was a direct violation of the professional boundaries expected from a city manager. The worst misstep, however, was his resignation letter, which he co-authored with The Pioneer publisher Tamara Steiner. In it he essentially declared that Clayton would never recover from its staff turnover and rebuild effectively.

Funny enough, it seems that some of us in the community were once expected to "eat crow" are now witnessing the very people who supported Prebula eating their own words. The new staff we have in place respects the importance of remaining apolitical, which is essential for proper governance.

While the critics continue to harp on the past turnover, they fail to acknowledge the very real issues we had with previous city managers and a dysfunctional staff—particularly in the finance department. The reality is, we've made significant strides forward with the new team in place. The results are clear: our city is improving, and our staff is dedicated to the job at hand.

To those who continue to focus on past turnover, we say: look at the progress we’re making today. It's time to move forward. Continuing to dwell on past grievances is a waste of time and energy, especially when we're on the path to solving Clayton's longstanding issues. If you don’t want to be part of the solution, please, don't become part of the problem.

Thanks for reading,

Randy Waterhouse

  2. IMHO . . . The growing tribalism in Clayton, with certain groups blindly supporting specific council members, has created an environment where open discussion is stifled. This partisanship has prevented crucial conversations about the town's reserves and future financial stability. I'm so glad Mayor Kim Trupiano has finally reeled them in, and we can return to business.

  3. It's now apparent that the last two city managers were bad hires. Now it's time to move forward and make the tough decisions on where our money should be spent. No new taxes please!

  4. Thank you Randy for helping me understand what is going on in this city. This is the second time someone mentioned Brett and his tribe of jerks. Who hired this moron? I hope it wasn't the current city council, but anyway I am glad he is gone. Randy keep telling us what is happing so I don't have to attend meetings..

  5. I guess the third time is a charm. It looks like the city is finally moving forward instead of moving backwards at warp speed. We have real leaders in charge now and it shows with results. All the wining and false narratives are behind us. The city manager knows how to manage and the city council knows how to lead. It is unfortunate that we had to suffer through two incompetent city managers and two elections to weed out incompetent city council members. Better days are ahead.

  7. It is nice we finally have a city manager, city staff and city council that is working with us instead of against us. We have lived in Clayton for 26 years and have seen many changes in this city, some good and some not so good. It look like we are on the right track now with our new city manager and Mayor Trupiano in charge.

  8. There is one persistent narcissist on the council who absolutely should resign for her treatment of Clayton. However, she refuses to take responsibility and instead plays the victim, shifting blame onto others whenever she isn't the center of attention. It’s time for her to step down and acknowledge her actions.

    1. It will never happen. She is too narcistic to recognize her incompetence.

    2. The six-month deadline is fast approaching, and the citizens of Clayton are possibly prepared to gather the necessary signatures to have her removed.

    3. That will not happen. Voters will not want to waste tax dollars to do so.

    5. There is a benefit for Holly serving on the council. She is so incompetent she make the other council members look good.

    6. It's quite striking that she had the audacity to declare herself the only one truly qualified for the position during her re-election campaign. Her self-inflated ego is quite evident.

  9. I proudly embrace our beautiful little city as it moves forward, free from the outside noise and confusion that certain individuals caused. Their influence did more harm than good to our community. A heartfelt thank you to Mayor Trupiano for tackling the tough issues with grace and dignity. I also appreciate the new staff for maintaining their neutrality, which is essential for allowing both the council and staff to effectively do their jobs.

  10. Our staff at city hall are the best. I’m so glad they cleaned house and got rid of stale and unproductive people.

  11. Randy, please prepare a write-up on Jim Killoran. He has been actively publishing misleading information on ND and Clayton Residents, presenting himself as an all-knowing expert. This isn’t the first time he’s done this, and it’s crucial to address his claims and set the record straight.
