Clayton Election Update

Schmidt and Callaghan Lead; Measures M and N Below Approval Thresholds

Published November 4, 2026
Results as of November 3 at 11:43 p.m.

Contra Costa County’s election-night report shows Charles J. Schmidt and Amy Callaghan leading for Clayton’s two City Council seats. These results remain unofficial.

City Council Results

CandidateVotesPercentage
Charles J. Schmidt1,86129.79%
Amy Callaghan1,75828.14%
Kim Trupiano1,33221.32%
Maria Shulman1,29720.76%

Callaghan currently leads Trupiano by 426 votes for the second seat. Percentages reflect candidate votes, with voters permitted to select up to two candidates.

Measures M and N

MeasureYesNoApproval required
Measure M1,458 · 41.46%2,059 · 58.54%Simple majority
Measure N1,843 · 52.66%1,657 · 47.34%Two-thirds

Both measures are currently below their required approval thresholds. Measure N has majority support, but requires two-thirds approval.

Why Are Measures M and N Falling Short?

Measure M needs a simple majority to pass. In the November 3 election-night results shown above, 58.54% voted against it and 41.46% supported it.

Measure N requires two-thirds approval, approximately 66.67%. Although 52.66% supported it, that is about 14 percentage points below the required threshold. A majority alone is not enough for passage.

These totals show how residents voted, but they do not establish why. Concerns about taxes, household costs, city spending, or the measures themselves may have influenced individual decisions; attributing the results to any particular cause would require more evidence.

The Count Is Not Final

The county labels this report “Unofficial Results – Election Night Final.”

  1. Although there may be more votes to count, it is unlikely that there are enough to change any of the results.

  2. Looks like all the negative info from CW regarding Callaghan and Schmidt was not effective.

    1. Negative? I thought it was factual. If you look at what is happening across the state of California that tells you everything you need to know. - Kathy

    2. Their seats were bought. With CBCA money, you can do a lot. Why is a nonprofit involved in politics? CBCA is a horrible organization, and I suggest that people no longer volunteer for it.

    3. Buckle up now! CBCA expects to be paid back! Watch now as this new council votes in a wonderful new contract for CBCA. Here's the best part, the city voted to kill all taxes! So there will be no money but Amy, Holly and Charlie will tell you it's what you voted for. Meanwhile the city's financial situation will go into critical status while all they do is blame Jeff and Kim. The CBCA president was out telling people not to vote for the sales tax. For sure, in 6 months, this new council won't be able to run away from reality. Giving money away when the city is headed off a cliff, go ahead sell me on why that's a good thing. They screamed we were going broke for 3 years. Well now their campaign tactics got us to where we really are going broke. But they must pay back their supporters, the CBCA. If the civil grand jury tried to make a case before, this time they will have a real case. You deserve what you vote for. But hey, Howard Geller will be back for your so called volunteer run concerts. The CBCA prefers voters are drunk and stupid. All it takes to buy Clayton voters is a concert or a parade and call it "community."

  3. People will love that their property tax is down by $300! Enjoy the weeds! How stupid can people be?

    1. Here in Clayton, we have a lot of stupid people. How about all the CBCA people go volunteer to take care of the weeds? I hate those people and their horrible methods of demeaning people and lying about them.

    1. It wasn’t just negative; they told lies. Then they bought Charlie and Amy’s seats with the CBCA war chest.

    1. It looks like people want shit for free and a progressive agenda. Wake up Clayton.

    2. Common sense was to have had the sales tax on the ballot two years ago, then LMD this year...better chance of passing one at a time. But the Wan/Trupiano/Diaz majority did not believe what was presented back then so pushed it off so they could balance the checkbook, etc. And now....no addtl revenue and cuts will be required.

    3. Who is the next mayor now? CW will have a field day if Tillman is selected.

    4. Thanks to Mayor Peter Cloven the checkbook hadn’t been balanced in over 18 months, so they delayed everything until they had a handle on the finances. Now they seem to know their numbers, but the citizens rejected their proposal. Go figure.

    5. Peter Cloven has been commenting extensively on social media about how Amy and Charlie conducted their campaigns with integrity. However, Maria and Kim did as well. False claims were widespread, largely from the CBCA and its supporters, and were directed at the two disfavored candidates. You and Teri Denslow then had the audacity to accuse them of complicity for not speaking out. This is hypocritical. Not one CBCA member or supporter defended the candidates you opposed, yet you expect them to defend your preferred candidates. The more you write and speak, the more your remarks undermine your credibility. Your conduct has been mean-spirited, vile, shameless, cowardly, and underhanded. I hope you each experience tenfold the harm you wished upon Maria and Kim. Maria and Kim demonstrated genuine integrity in how they handled the smear campaign against them.

  6. Clayton residents shouldn’t complain when the old guard returns to the CBCA and takes over. You voted them into office, and Tillman will be back to her usual camera-ready theatrics. Where are the people with intellect and critical thinking? This makes it clear that the CBCA bought Charlie and Amy’s seats. What they did to Kim and Maria was despicable. I know them both well, and I can say plainly that Bassam and Lee’s racist campaign was built on lies. Kim has worked tirelessly for this city. Welcome to high development under Amy.

  7. I would not want to be on this council now. The tax measures are failing. Can't wait to see the new braintrust tell us their solutions! Of course all they need to do is give stupid voters more concerts and the voters will believe everything is great. Meanwhile Clayton is headed for the same route as Vallejo!

    1. Oh, but wait—Amy definitely said she would end concerts in the Grove, classic car shows, and Hispanic heritage. Let's see her talk her way out of this one. The new council is a CBCA dirtbag city, with Holly as the lead scum.

    2. Amy and Holly are hard leftist progressives. They wanted both tax measures to fail. Front and center: DEFUND THE COPS. The Clayton progressives hate the police. Mayor Tillman and Vice Mayor Callaghan will be cutting the police in early 27.

  8. Without Measure N we are screwed without getting kissed. What was city hall thinking. They needed to get out in front of this sooner. It was promoted as tax, but it was just a renewal. Lookout . . .more weeds to come.

  9. More division in Clayton. Now we have the far left liberals in control. What could go wrong? More parades and free stuff. Sounds great. People. . . you weren’t thinking when you voted, but that ok your property valves will surly go down from here and then you can complain as normal. -Glen and Randi

  10. Here comes more Drag shows, Low income housing, gas stations, and lets turn the park downtown into a homeless hangout too while we're at it. don't forget the new bus lines and pollution you lefties voted for. what's on your menu ?

  11. Our election results are very disappointing. As they say, Clayton voters, stupid is as stupid does. And to add another cliche, "You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone."

    2. You should have stood up and demanded that Bassam and Lee stop spreading lies everywhere. Where was your outrage then? Bassam and Lee are racist, bigoted keyboard warriors. All they had was a snippet from a 10-year-old article expressing how someone felt. Is it acceptable when they do it, but not when others do? They’re hypocrites. I’m sorry Maria didn’t make it onto the council; she genuinely cares about this city and does a great deal of behind-the-scenes volunteer work. The hate directed at her was completely uncalled for. She was right to call out Lee for causing trouble. She saw through him from the start; even his students can’t stand him. - Lauren H.

  13. It will be a pleasure to watch the idiots Tillman, Amy, Charlie, and Diaz try to figure out what to do with the budget since the measures didn’t pass. They are all as dumb as a box of rocks! Holly now has no one to do the work, so she will have to do it herself. This will be fun. Holly is a lazy pile.

  14. The first test of Amy Callaghan's promise of a return to civility will be what they do for the next mayor. If the new majority, Holly Amy and Charle bypass Rich Enea Sr and appoint Holly as mayor and Amy as Vice Mayor, that civility promise will be pure BS. The rumors are this is in the works. Amy and Charlie should make public announcements now that they will respect the rotation and not repeat the Cloven way of doing things. We all know Holly wants the gavel so bad and is capable of violating the rotation as she did it In 2020 and 2021.
