Video (1) Segregation, White Washing, Sundown Town and More

Preview: In this video, Holly Tillman presents misleading assertions regarding the language used in our housing element. She argues that the terminology is exclusionary, claims it is whitewashed, and suggests it fosters segregation within the community. Additionally, she alleges that Clayton functions as a Sundown Town, stating that individuals leave before nightfall. She mentions that residents from neighboring cities avoid driving through Clayton due to its reputation as a Sundown Town. During a conference in Long Beach, she recounts a conversation with a man from San Leandro who expressed interest in purchasing a home in Clayton, only for his wife to firmly refuse, citing concerns about safety in a town labeled as a Sundown Town.

These are Holly's words, not ours.  Video length = 71 seconds.

Special note to Holly Tillman - If you do something long enough, you get good at it…..and that includes “BS”

  1. Ms Tillman has no proof of any of this happening. If there were any problems, we would have all heard about it from our chief of police. In addition, why do both her and her husband play bocce at night downtown?

    1. Absolutely correct. As a citizen of Clayton for over 40 years, I have never seen or heard anything about Clayton being a "Sundown town" until Holly brought it up. Demeaning our city and calling it racist because we are against high-density housing is self-serving to bring attention to her agenda.

  2. If these comment about our town were true, why didn’t Holly standup for the community and take it upon her self to correct the messenger. All she is doing is dragging our town through the mud for her own political gain. Holly must go! Clayton Watch, thanks for sending me the informative postcard.

  3. This is absolutely appalling to me. How could anyone believe all this BS. Give me a break. People are afraid to come to town after dark. It appears Holly has no moral compass. She needs to go.

  4. Holly said she has lived in Clayton for 21years. Why did she move to town where people are afraid to come out of their house after dark? Most of the council meeting end after dark. Does she have a police escort follow her home after each meeting.

  5. If you listen to Holly, you would think Clayton is a horrible place to live. I have here for 28 years and I moved to Clayton because of its rural character, with big lots, peace and quiet, and friendly people. She is way off base with all her accusations. Time to go Holly

  6. Holly Tillman lives in a million dollar plus castle in Clayton. Her comments make it sound like the klan is still around burning crosses on people’s lawn. A sundown town, really? Segregation? If we still segregate how does she live in her million dollar castle in Clayton? She accuses our police of being racist and profiling without evidence. Funny how this election she completely changed her tune and pretends she didn’t say any of this over the last 4 years. Maybe some voters and many of her supporters haven’t seen this side of her. We don’t need more of this. We don’t need someone who changes her stripes and says anything to get elected. 4 years ago the cops were racist and profiled, now she can’t take enough pictures with them and she says she wants to buy their loyalty with higher pay. There are other candidates who won’t bring this kind of nonsense.

    1. I’m not sure I would call her home a castle with its zero lot lines.

  7. I am flabbergasted by Holly comments about our wonderful little town. I don't know what whitewashing the housing element means, but it doesn't sound like a good thing. Because of my heritage, I could be included in one of those categories she said that Clayton wants to exclude. I have never felt unwelcome here. On the contrary, this is one of the most friendly welcoming town I have ever lived in. I even go out after dark without fear. Why is she trying to destroy such a wonderful place to live? Thank you Clayton watch for this information.

  8. I just saw a post by Peter Cloven on nextdoor telling Clayton voters to only vote for Tillman. It is obvious that Holly and her supporters really don't care about Clayton and they are trying to keep her on the council to push their radical agenda. If she gets re-elected you can expect 4 more years of all her destructive BS.

    1. Actually, her supporters, along with her have no interest working with anyone. It’s her alone and her agenda they want. Holly just posted on her Facebook page that everyone should only vote for her. In the same breadth she claims she listens to all. How can you listen to all if you don’t want anyone else on the council? Any politician that wants total power should scare all of us.

    2. I'm disgusted with Holly for condoning the #onlyholly movement. Her support for this action proves that she only cares about what she wants. Please vote her out. We don't need her

  9. I have lived in Clayton for over 40 years, and have never seen any indication that we are a Sundown town. This candidate is running on untruths and fearmongering, and should not be re-elected to the Council. My household will be voting for Diaz, Enea, and Shulman.

    1. Completely agree - Never experienced Tillman's perception in this town living here over 40 years coming from multi-racial family and friends.

  10. Segregation? Let's be realistic. Everyone has an equal chance to buy a home in Clayton; the only prerequisite is having the necessary income to afford it. Perhaps it's time for some individuals to seek employment and work their way up, just as the rest of us have done. From my observation, during the riots, nobody was stealing work boots, they were only stealing TVs and liquor.

  11. Holly is fully accountable for her video words and actions. These videos are harmful, featuring her hurtful remarks aimed at Council members, wild accusations, disparaging our beautiful town, and fostering division. I see no justification for supporting Holly.

  14. Where is Holly's integrity? I'm sorry, but I can not vote for such an obstructionist. Even the husband has proven slimly at the CBCA. They are about looking like they do a lot, but in reality, they have their pictures taken while everyone else does the work.

  15. Clayton is most definitely Not a Sundown town, I have not heard of it being unsafe for anybody, I’m sure if people were beat, murdered in our town we would hear about it. But, if you’re caught roaming about in the middle of the night, there may be Suspicion, no matter what race you are, that’s being Diligent. We love our small down, it’s unique, Quaint, and a great place to raise a family. If that isn’t what you’re looking for, in a town to call your home, then you probably shouldn't.

  16. It’s always about race. If it’s not about race, she will play the victim card. Everyone I talk to in Clayton and around the state is sick of this bullshit.

  17. Don't you know it is the victim mentality? Unfortunately for Holly, there is a history in this country of something terrible happening to all races, nationalities, religions, and genders. The blacks, however, like to think everything is about them instead of doing what other races have done, making things better for themselves without relying on the race card. The Chinese are doing it after mass murders building the railroads in this country. The largest Italian immigrant mass murder in this country happened in New Orleans. Native Americans had their land, culture, and lives taken just for being native-born. I could go on and on, but the point is, STOP the whole black victimization routine. It doesn't work. It's disgusting.
